A booth giveaway that booked meetings
Our client, a media and newswire technology company, was exhibiting at a major industry summit alongside more than 40 competitors. Their sales team had a familiar problem: the standard tote-bag-and-pen giveaway pulled plenty of foot traffic, but most of it was badge-scanners collecting swag, not people worth a follow-up call.
The brief
The sales lead didn't want more booth traffic. She wanted a giveaway that filtered for genuine buying interest, and a way to measure it in something more concrete than "the booth felt busy."
What we built
We designed a "signal kit" — a dual-port portable charger paired with a small engraved brass pin, made well enough that it didn't read as throwaway swag. The twist was distribution: instead of sitting on the table, booth staff offered the kit only to attendees who booked a 15-minute live product demo on the spot, using a tablet set up at the booth. The giveaway became the incentive for a real commitment, not a reward for walking past.
Results
Over the 3-day summit and a short post-show scheduling window (14 days total), the booth converted roughly 290 qualifying conversations into 68 booked demos — a 23% conversation-to-demo rate their sales lead called well above their usual trade show baseline. We produced 310 kits; about 52 went unclaimed on-site and were repurposed as follow-up mailers for warm leads who hadn't booked in the moment.
Why it worked
Scarcity did the work that volume usually gets asked to do. A nicer item given to fewer, more qualified people outperformed a cheaper item given to everyone — and gave the sales team a number to report that wasn't just booth traffic.
